Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be the youngest woman to ever serve in Congress

<p>Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the woman poised to represented Queens and the Bronx in Congress, recently raised some eyebrows with <a href="https://www.pbs.org/video/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-barhhq/" target="_blank">an interview</a> she gave to PBS. </p><p>"Unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs," Ocasio-Cortez said in the July 13 interview. "Unemployment is low because people are working 60, 70, 80 hours a week and can barely feed their kids."</p><p>That's <a href="https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2018/jul/18/alexandria-ocasio-cortez/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-wrong-several-counts-abou/" target="_blank">not how unemployment statistics work</a>.</p><p>The Bureau of Labor Statistics gets <a href="https://www.bls.gov/cps/cps_htgm.htm" target="_blank">its unemployment </a>figure by measuring the number of available workers without a job, and actively looking for one, against the people who have at least one job. You don't get counted twice if you have two jobs.</p><p>What's more, BLS says <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LNS12026620" target="_blank">about 5 percent</a> of employed people have more than one job. And it says about 4.8 percent of people working two jobs have two full-time jobs, which would require about 80 hours a week. That amounts to a teeny percentage of the workforce plugging away double time.</p><p>So the idea that people holding multiple jobs makes the unemployment rate misleadingly low is inaccurate and totally misrepresents how things work.</p><hr><b>Trending stories at <a href="http://www.newsy.com">Newsy.com</a></b><ul class="inline-related-links"><li><a href="http://www.newsy.com/stories/us-defense-bill-would-suspend-fighter-jet-sales-to-turkey/">US Defense Bill Would Suspend Fighter Jet Sales To Turkey</a></li><li><a href="http://www.newsy.com/stories/trump-page-docs-show-steele-dossier-started-mueller-probe/">Trump Says The Steele Dossier Launched The Mueller Probe - It Didn't</a></li><li><a href="http://www.newsy.com/stories/lawsuit-over-census-citizenship-question-to-move-forward/">Multistate Lawsuit Over Census Citizenship Question To Move Forward</a></li></ul>

New York Democratic congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will win her general election race easily and become the youngest woman ever in Congress, CNN has projected.

Having turned 29 last month, Ocasio-Cortez will inch out the previous holder of the distinction, New York Democratic Rep. Elise Stefanik, who was elected to Congress at age 30.

Ocasio-Cortez defeated New York Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in the primary election earlier this year. The victory was considered a stunner and helped make Ocasio-Cortez a national political figure.

Crowley was the No. 4 Democrat in the House and seen as a potential speaker one day. His loss effectively handed the seat to Ocasio-Cortez, a Latina who has become a key left-wing voice.

Ocasio-Cortez ran unabashedly to Crowley's left in the New York City district and previously worked as an organizer on Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign. She is the daughter of Puerto Rican parents and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
