As a powerful storm lifts northeast from the Gulf Mexico, at least one fatality was reported as nearly two dozen tornadoes swept the Gulf Coast Tuesday evening.

A fatality was reported by the National Weather Service as a tornado passed near Baxterville, Mississippi at 5:30 p.m. CST. The Associated Press also reported two additional storm-related deaths in the South.

Storms started developing midday near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Storms continued into Mississippi and Alabama through the afternoon and early evening. Tornado watches remained in effect for parts of Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

Storms are expected to remain strong in the South through Wednesday. The storm is also expected to cause a major winter storm in the Midwest Wednesday.
