(WVTM/NBC) - An 11-year-old boy who shot a home intruder in Alabama said the would-be burglar “cried like a baby.”

The child, Chris Gaither, was home alone on Wednesday morning when he heard a noise and discovered someone had broken into his house.

"I told him I was going to kill him if he didn't get out of my house," said Chris.

He said even though he was scared, he grabbed a 9mm handgun.

"When he was coming down the stairs, that's when he told me he was going to kill me," said Chris.

The intruder made it out the front door, but that's when Chris started firing off bullets. As the intruder was about to jump a fence, Chris's 12th and final shot hit the bad guy in the leg.

"I shot through the hamper he was carrying, it was a full-metal jacket bullet. It went straight through the back of his leg. He started crying like a little baby," said Chris. "When I pulled the gun out on him, I guess he didn't think it was a real gun, because he didn't worry about it he just kept on walking."

The police have not released the name of the intruder, but Chris's mother says this man has robbed their house before. They don't know him personally.

Chris credits his stepdad for his shooting skills.

"Yeah, probably zombies for target practice,” said Chris.  "I hope you learn your lesson coming to this house trying to steal stuff."

The intruder was taken to an area hospital, but his condition is unknown.
