(CNN) - Video captured Monday showed the exact moment lightning hit the empire state building

Recorded by Henrik Moltke, you can see the city light up and then lightning strikes the 103-story building.

New York is experiencing severe weather fueled by hot temperatures that are blanketing much of the eastern U.S.

The storms started mid-afternoon creating flash floods in the area.

The Empire State Building acts as a lightning rod for Manhattan and is struck an average of 23 times per year.
