The owner of a pit bull seen in a viral video chomping down on a woman's shoe on a crowded New York subway car has been arrested.

Cellphone video was taken of the incident on April 20.

On Thursday, police arrested Ruben Roncallo of Brooklyn on charges of assault and reckless endangerment.

Witnesses say the scuffle began when Roncallo allowed the dog to take a seat on the crowded #4 train in Manhattan.

When the dog bumped another passenger Roncallo began arguing with the women before punching her in the face.

When the woman hit back the dog attacked her foot.

Video shows the woman struggle as the dog clamps down and the surrounding crowd yells. The dog released her shoe and was taken off the train by its owner.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says non-service animals should be contained on the subway.

Before Thursday night's arraignment, Roncallo defended the dog, saying it was a service dog and the woman attacked first.
