(NBC) - Friday is National Dog Day, celebrating man's best friend and encouraging people to adopt a dog.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of cruelty to animals, the first year of dog ownership can cost about $1,300 for a smaller dog and up to $1,800 for a larger breed.
These costs include one-time expenses such as spaying and neutering, initial medical fees and buying a crate.
After the first year, it calculates the cost drops to about $580 to $875 a year.
