(WTHR, NBC NEWSCHANNEL) Surveillance video of an armed robbery near Indiana's Greenwood Park Mall didn't turn out the way you would expect.

The clerk gave the robber some money, but he also lectured him on the pitfalls of being a criminal.

Even police couldn't believe how this one played out.

"I've never seen anything like this," said Greenwood's Assistant Police Chief Matthew Fillenwarth. "That's what he told the investigating officers, 'I was telling him this is wrong, what you're doing'."

At one point in the surveillance, you can see the crook walk around the counter to get the cash.

That doesn't work either.

"He's telling him you get back out from behind this counter. You don't belong here," Fillenwarth said.

Later, the robber tries getting in the register himself. But again, he's stopped and scolded.

Greenwood Police say the clerk is lucky to be alive. They warn against this kind of reaction by store employees.

In this case, the criminal only got away with a few bucks, along with a lesson in being a better man.
