(WCBD/NBC) - A South Carolina family got an Easter surprise – a big, angry alligator lounging on their front porch.
The Polston family of Mount Pleasant, S.C., says they were awaken Sunday morning by commotion on their front porch.
At first they thought it was someone trying to break-in to their home, but then soon found a 9-foot, 300-pound gator had climbed onto their porch.
They say the large reptile had to climb a 15-foot staircase, break through a screen, climb through a doorway, and then push furniture out of the way.
They did what any wise person would do, they called the state’s department of natural resources to remove the large reptile.
“I knocked on the door and sure enough it was a live gator,” said resident Steve Polston. "He was perfectly happy and would have stayed for however long."
Wildlife experts say this type of behavior is not unusual for alligators during this time of the year.
They say the reptiles are making their way out of hibernation and begin defending their territory as they move into mating season and warmer waters.
