WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — If you see large amounts of smoke in the downtown West Palm Beach area Tuesday, there is no cause for alarm.
The West Palm Beach Fire Department, in partnership with Related Ross, is conducting live fire training exercises at 612 2nd Street from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. Controlled fires will be set inside the structures, and smoke and flames will be visible throughout the day.
The structures being used for training have been uninhabited for several years and have become locations for vagrancy, criminal activity and ongoing neighborhood concerns. Their deteriorated condition has also negatively impacted the adjacent apartment complex and surrounding community. By allowing the Fire Department to use the buildings for training, Related Ross is helping provide hands-on experience for firefighters.
The training exercises will be conducted under strict safety standards and under the supervision of certified fire training personnel. Officials say there is no danger to the public, and the area will be fully secured throughout the operation. Residents and visitors are asked to avoid the immediate training area during scheduled exercise times.
What to expect
In the days leading up to the live fire training, residents may notice increased Fire Department activity in the area, including fire apparatus and personnel. During the exercises, residents should also expect noise from fire apparatus, ventilation fans and other sounds associated with fire department training. Officials say noise levels will be kept to a minimum whenever possible.
Parking and access
Parking on 2nd Street is not permitted on Tuesday, June 2. Residents and guests will not be permitted to use the parking garage entrance on 2nd Street between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. due to fire hydrant access. The Sapodilla entrance will be available as usual.
