According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one of five Americans will develop skin cancer by the time they’re 70, with approximately 9,500 new cases diagnosed every day. But while us adults may know how important it is to protect ourselves from the sun, if you have children, you know it’s not exactly easy to convince them of the dangers.
Yes, you can pull them out of the sun every 40 minutes and reapply sunscreen, but odds are they’ll put up a fuss and say they don’t need more. Thankfully, some pretty clever people in the Netherlands have created a T-shirt that changes color when it’s time for your child to get out of the sun.
Here’s how it works: According to the makers of the shirt, adam & aoki, the shirt acts like a second skin, sensing when a child is about to get sunburned, at which point the sleeve of their T-shirt turns bright red. The T-shirt is activated when UV rays from the sunburn action spectrum are present, and the sleeve changes color before the skin gets burned, giving kids (and you!) time to either slather on sunscreen or head inside.
The brand even takes into account the fact that different skin tones burn at different rates, and they offer three different T-shirt types — very sensitive for skin that burns easily and doesn’t tan, less sensitive for the sometimes sunburned child and non-sensitive for skin that almost never burns or tans.
There are five designs available, including a flamingo and a lion, ensuring your kid will want to wear it. It’s also machine washable and fully reusable, and no other technology — like a phone or app — is needed.
There is currently a campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds for the shirt, where you can become a backer of the project and put yourself on the list to get one when they begin shipping in June 2019. Prices range from about $43–$49 per shirt, though there are packages that will get you more than one. If the Indiegogo count does not reach its goal of around $21,000, you will receive a refund instead of a shirt.
