(NBC) - A new study says letting babies cry themselves to sleep helps reduce nighttime waking without causing emotional or behavioral issues.

Australian researchers found "crying it out" helped babies fall asleep about 13 minutes sooner with fewer overnight awakenings compared to other infants.

Saliva samples also showed these babies did not produce higher amounts of stress hormones when they were allowed to cry, and it did not affect their mood.
