State and federal authorities are teaming up for the 12th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day this weekend.

The event overseen by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at numerous locations in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

Law enforcement agencies will collect unused medication and safely dispose of it to prevent potential abuse by people who find it in the trash. Proper disposal also protects the environment.

The DEA says prescription drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a doctor's supervision, and can lead to accidental poisoning, overdose and addiction.

Prescription drug abuse is a widespread problem in Florida and nationally.
