Medical staff in Bangladesh say they have performed the first surgery on a young man suffering from a disease which makes bark-like growths appear on his body.

According to local media, 26-year-old Abul Bajandar suffers from a rare skin disorder called Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis, which is also known as "tree man illness", because the warts that appear on the limbs as a result of the condition look like a tree branch.

Bajandar was admitted to a hospital in Dhaka in January and his right hand was operated on in the first of what doctors say could be up to a dozen surgeries.

Local media reported that Bajandar, who is unable to use his hands, was operated on for three hours by a nine-member team of doctors.

Bajandar is believed to be the fourth person in the world to suffer from tree man illness.
