Two weeks after reporting that she was targeted in a New York City subway, 18-year-old Yasmin Seweid has been charged with filing a false police report after she told authorities she concocted the story, the New York Daily News reported on Wednesday.
Seweid claimed that three drunken men tried to grab her hijab, shouted "Donald Trump" and called the woman a terrorist.
The New York Daily News reported that authorities were becoming increasingly suspicious of the teen's story. No witnesses had stepped forward, and there was no video of the alleged incident.
On Wednesday, she admitted the story was not true.
“This isn’t something we normally like to do but she had numerous opportunities to admit nothing happened and she kept sticking by her story,” a New York Daily News source said.
Authorities do not know why Seweid fabricated the story. Seweid is a Muslim born in the United States to Egyptian parents.
The charge is a class A misdemeanor, which could be publishable by up to one year in jail, and a $1,000 fine.
