(NBC) - Wearing decorative contact lenses for Halloween can be a real scream, but there's something you should know before making your purchase.
Federal law enforcement authorities are warning consumers about non-prescription, costume contact lenses.
Several varieties illegally sold at retail outlets and online can cause eye infections, eye injuries and even loss of eyesight.
By federal law, a prescription is required to buy costume contact lenses, but some vendors continue to sell them over the counter.
Consumers are urged to only buy them from retailers who require a prescription and sell FDA-approved products.
