It’s probably no surprise that Mercedes convertibles dominate the list of the “most expensive” vehicles to insure. (The Mercedes S65 AMG is the most expensive, with annual premiums averaging $3,835. Oof!) But you might be surprised to learn which vehicles are the least expensive to insure.  To help, Insure.com did the research, comparing car insurance rates in every single state for more than 2,800 vehicle models. Before arriving at the rankings, Insure.com pulled quotes from six different insurance companies and then averaged the rates. We’ll give you a hint: Minivans tend to fare well on the “least expensive list.” That’s because they’re loaded with safety features, garnering high ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Plus, they’re mostly driven by parents chauffeuring their children around. The safety features combined with cautious drivers translates to fewer accidents, fewer claims and lower rates, explains the research team at Insure.com. On the other hand, convertibles may be prone to break-ins because of their roofs and might inspire a need for speed. So, if you’re shopping for a new car, these rankings can help shape your overall car budget, factoring in not just the vehicle payments, but also insurance premiums.
