Stamping out hunger

Posted

There's an easy way for you to help families dealing with hunger in our community.

Your postal carrier will be collecting non-perishable food Saturday.

It’s the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive put on by the National Association of Letter Carriers.

The event has been taking place for 24 years.

Last year people across the country donated the equivalent of more than 70-million pounds of food.

You just need to leave your donation outside by your mailbox Saturday and your mail carrier will pick it up.

The latest information available from the government shows more than 48-million Americans are dealing with food insecurity. Food insecurity means not having consistent access to adequate food. It's impacted by having enough money and other resources.

Children and older Americans are two of the groups dealing with food insecurity the most.

Homes with children are 7% more likely to be food insecure compared to the national average.

More than 5-million seniors are food insecure.
