Single mom in Florida gains worldwide buzz for 'ugly, tacky' Christmas sweaters

WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. — Deb Rottum’s “ugly, tacky” fashion style has made her a worldwide smash.

The single mom’s gaudy, Grinch-y Christmas sweaters and dresses were recently featured in London’s Daily Mail newspaper.

The Florida fashionista has shipped her light-up, tinsel-heavy holiday finery to Australia and Sweden.

“When I’m putting these things together, I’m not really thinking about what I’m doing, I just do it,” says Rottum, who also works part-time at Moffitt Cancer Center.

“I grab the stuff, put it on the sweater, and then it starts to look tacky and ugly,” she said.

Rottum, who makes ugly tacky Hanukkah sweaters as well, started toying with the idea a few years ago.

She stitched a couple together. She put a few online. And then, demand grew.

She gets many of the sweaters, dresses and hats — and the blinking, jingling tchotchkes that go on them (Barbies! Olaf! Charlie Brown!) — at thrift stores.

Her biggest seller just happens to have a giant Grinch on the front.
