DELAND, Fla.-- A 21-year-old woman was critically injured Wednesday in a skydiving accident after a hard fall near the Deland Municipal Airport, according to city officials.

Deland police and fire crews responded at about 5:34 p.m. after Samantha Smith landed hard west of Skydive Deland.

She was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach where she is in critical but stable condition.

Witnesses told police Smith's parachute was fully deployed, but it appeared that she wasn't able to fully stabilize herself before hitting a gravel walkway.
