DANIA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Police in South Florida are searching for the person who fatally shot a 41-year-old attending an impromptu gathering to memorialize the life of a friend.

Broward Sheriff's spokeswoman Gina Carter tells the Sun Sentinel that Freddy Calloway was struck by a blast of gunfire Friday night. He was among dozens of people who were remembering 55-year-old Percy Walker who had died a week earlier.

She says the gunman approached the group about 10:30 p.m. and shot Calloway.

Carter says the deaths of Calloway and Walker aren't related.

Detectives are asking witnesses to "come forward and help the victim's family find justice."

The motive for the shooting remains unclear. Carter says no one else was injured.

Dania Beach is near Fort Lauderdale.
