PARKER, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a convicted robber from Alabama who left his Georgia work-release program and allegedly killed a man in Florida has killed himself.

A Gulf County Sheriff's statement says Stephen Michael Smith shot himself in the head as U.S. marshals and deputies surrounded his vehicle Tuesday evening in Parker, Florida.

The 34-year-old Smith was reported missing last week when he didn't return from work to the Georgia facility.

Florida resident Daniel Lee Upton was found fatally wounded Monday morning and authorities say he identified Smith as the shooter before dying.

They say he also named 44-year-old Destiny Jene Terry, who has been arrested and charged with being a principal to second-degree murder.
