MILTON, Fla. (AP) — A Florida sheriff says an injured K-9 is recovering and the man who punched the dog has been arrested.

Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson tells news outlets 6-year-old Orkon had been rushed into surgery after 48-year-old Alan Gilkerson broke into a house in Milton and punched him several times.

Johnson says he went to the home Tuesday for a reported burglary and had a deputy send Orkon inside. The sheriff says Gilkerson had been hiding in the attic when the deputy found him attacking Orkon. He says the K-9 was bleeding severely.

Johnson says Orkon should return to work in about ten days.

Gilkerson appeared in court Wednesday on battery of a law enforcement officer, burglary and other charges. It's unclear if he has a lawyer who could comment.
