ORANGE CITY, Fla. (AP) — Police say a paving machine ran over and killed a construction worker in Florida.
Orange City police Lt. Jason Sampsell tells news outlets 72-year-old Ulysses Tolbert was driving the machine Tuesday when he fell off and was partially run over.
The Deltona man had been applying asphalt for a parking lot at medical facility under construction.
Sampsell says Tolbert's fellow workers tried to get the machine off him. Authorities were called and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police had to use heavy machinery to lift the paver and remove Tolbert's body.
Sampsell says Tolbert was an employee for Pavemax Asphalt Services and had worked in the construction or asphalt business for roughly three decades.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was called for an investigation.
