LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- One year ago Monday, 9-year-old Diana Alvarez went missing from her San Carlos Park home. But not all hope is lost, as her family clings to the hope she will be found alive.
On May 29, 2016, multiple local and state agencies searched by ground and by air for Diana after she was reported missing.
Despite extensive searches in several counties, Diana was never found. But now there’s a new group of volunteers looking to find her.
A team from Peace River K9 Search and Rescue has volunteered to do a physical search to look for any evidence relating to Diana.
Diana's mother, Rita Hernandez, is hopeful these volunteers are able to find something that may lead to finding her daughter. "God knows where she is, and God performed a miracle by uniting us with those volunteers who are going to help look for her. God is great."
The volunteers will begin searching near a trail in Orlando. That's where the suspect tied to her disappearance, Jorge Guerrero, ditched a cell phone that police tracked him to in the days she went missing.
Some believe the two were together in that area of Central Florida, known as Yeehaw Junction.
Guerrero is now in prison after being found guilty of child porn in federal court for having lewd images of Diana on his cell phone.
