In case you were wondering... Yes, I do like long walks on the beach,” jokes Bryan Galvin on his GoFundMe page.
This walk is on a new level. He’s on a journey of awareness.
Galvin is walking 400 miles in 20 days down the eastern coast of Florida to pick up trash. More importantly, he wants to bring awareness to a worldwide issue of plastic in the oceans and along the shorelines.
The Plastic Symptoms websiteand Facebook page are sharing his documented journey through blogs, photos, and pictures.
Various ocean conservation sites estimate 20-30 billion pounds of plastic end up in our ocean each year. Much of it is single-use items for dining, such as plastic straws and plastic bags. Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach says it’s no longer a question of if a rescued turtle will have plastic in its stomach, it’s a question of how much.
By day 13, Galvin had completed his pass through Sebastian, having picked up an estimated 700 pounds of plastic. He plans to enter Martin County on May 13and the Boynton Beach and Delray Beach area May 14.
Along the way, he has been joined by friends and other conservationists. The journey started in Fernandina Beach and will end in Miami Beach.
