TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Citizens Property Insurance customers will receive additional information about policy options under a bill passed by the Florida Legislature.
The bill initially included rate protections for customers who switch coverage from Citizens to a private insurer. But that provision was stripped from the bill (HB 931) by the Florida House.
Instead the bill requires policyholders to be told how much their new policy would cost if they switch.
Rep. Kathleen Passidomo defended removing the rate protections because a similar bill was vetoed in 2015 by Gov. Rick Scott. Bill sponsor Sen. Anitere Flores said she accepted the move to get the bill passed. It heads now to Scott.
Citizens has nearly 500,000 policyholders. In recent years, legislators have pushed to shrink Citizens by encouraging homeowners to switch to private insurance.
