A track coach at a Tampa high school is charged with two counts of sexual battery after police said he gave a female student alcohol and had sex with her twice on a team trip.
Dwight Lamont Smith, 47, was fired Nov. 12 from Freedom High School after officials learned of an inappropriate conversation he had with a student, according to Hillsborough County Schools.
His arrest report says the alleged incident occurred Sept. 18 while the team stayed overnight in Gainesville.
While they ate dinner, Smith gave the 17-year-old girl alcohol, the report says. He then gave her the key to his room, it says, telling her to go there for “counseling.”
Smith gave her more alcohol in the room, the report says, and she became intoxicated.
The report says he told the girl to stay in his room after he had sex with her, but she left, returning later after he texted her. He’s accused of giving her more alcohol and having sex with her again.
Smith was a volunteer coach for the girls track and cross country teams, according to the school district. He also worked as a temporary classroom assistant.
