ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A Florida school superintendent has apologized for the "unfortunate mistakes" that kept a valedictorian from delivering her speech at her high school graduation.
News outlets report that hours before Tuesday's ceremony, University High School administrators notified the mother of 18-year-old Kriya Naidu that she wouldn't be giving the speech because it wasn't recorded ahead of time as requested.
She'd been asked to remove some jokes from the speech that focused primarily on her parents' experiences as immigrants from South Africa. She says school officials asked her late Thursday to record the speech. But she had an exam on Friday and then worked at a tutoring center.
She posted the speech on YouTube.
Orange County school superintendent Barbara Jenkins invited her to deliver the speech at an upcoming school board meeting.
