TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida lawmakers are considering raising the age limit to smoke or use electronic cigarettes from 18 to 21.

Health advocates say the change could help cut the use of e-cigarettes among young people, who vape more than any other age group.

Some lawmakers say vaping is a health crisis waiting to happen. But e-cigarette retailers argue vaping is not the same as smoking tobacco and the legislation would hurt their businesses.

In December, the federal government raised the age to buy both tobacco cigarettes and e-cigarettes to 21 nationwide. But states are passing their own laws because enforcement is usually done on the local and state level.
