HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) -- One of 11 Cubans who landed on a South Florida beach over the weekend is facing an assault charge after authorities say he swung a machete at a federal officer.
SunSentinel reports that a federal magistrate ordered Lazaro Mora Gutierrez to be held without bond during a Tuesday hearing. He faces up to 20 years in prison.
A complaint filed Monday says Gutierrez swung a machete at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer as federal agents, including the U.S. Coast Guard, tried to stop the 12-foot boat off a Hollywood beach.
After missing the agent, Gutierrez reportedly dropped the machete and then tried to stab himself with another knife.]
Agents eventually backed away, and the boat -- carrying 10 men and one woman -- made it to the beach.
