Building a focus on school, not crime in Delray Beach.

Organizers in the Frog Alley neighborhood held their first "Guns down, Kids up" event. Delray Beach Police joined the community as well.

More than a hundred people came out to the event which included, games, food, and interactions with first responders. Organizers also gave away 300 backpacks with school supplies for the upcoming school year.

Organizers say there has been some crime in the neighborhood and some kids have been going down the wrong path, but this event reverses the trend.

"Crime is at a vast in our community and if we don't start doing something, then I can point myself and kick me in the butt because I'm not doing anything. It's my responsibility as well as the next guy to do something," says Andre Andrews.

Delray Beach Police Chief Jeff Goldman says this event is also about encouraging the community to be involved with law enforcement.

"Think the difference here is that this community got together and said hey let's try to make a difference and invited several fire, police and community groups," says Goldman.

Organizers plan to hold this event every year before kids go back to school.
