A man accused of abusing his roommate's dog is under arrest.

Marquan Parks tied the animal to a doorknob in the backyard of a house, beat it and deprived the dog of food and water, according to Boynton Beach police.

They say the case stems from last September.

The dog, named Puma, died from the injuries, according to police.

A veterinarian who performed a necropsy concluded that Puma died of probable "strangulation" and "contributing factors may be heat stroke."

When later questioned, Parks, 22, said the dog had chewed up his shoes, went to the bathroom and later escaped, according to a police report.

When Parks found the dog he tied it to the back doorknob to prevent it from getting loose, the report says.

"I could have gave (sic) the dog water by I didn't," he's quoted as saying to police. They say he told them that he felt the animal was not his responsibility.

Parks faces one count of cruelty to animals.
