PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla.--- An arrest has been made in connection with a fire that damaged a home in Boynton Beach.

The fire happened August 1, at 104 N.W. 5th Ave., and responding officers said when they arrived the residence was partially engulfed in flames and rapidly growing in size.

A witness said he saw Cleveland Mack Jr. leaving the building while it was on fire, according to a police report.

When police questioned Mack Jr., he said he was at the residence to meet a friend named Becky and that's when he noticed a small fire and that he was concerned about her, the report said.

A search for the woman came up empty.

Police said Mack Jr. also told them he didn't have a phone but noticed a couple across the street who appeared to be calling for help, so he left the area.

Late last month detectives said they received a forensic analysis that showed gasoline was used to set the fire.

Police said they have charged Mack Jr., who jail records indicate is homeless, with arson. They said the 55-year-old was in the Palm Beach County Jail on unrelated charges.
