Police spokesman Mark Economou said a witness thought they saw a man in distress near 1400 N Ocean Blvd. around 7:30 p.m.
Authorities said witnesses told them they spotted a surf board in the water.
Police said they checked the area, with the assistance of the Coast Guard and Broward County Sheriff's Office, but no one in distress was located.
Officials had said the surfer could be a man in his 40s.
The Coast Guard tweeted Saturday morning that a search near the Boca Inlet was suspended.
