Only a couple hundred children make the cut to participate in the E.W. Scripps National Spelling Bee each year.

Leading up to the big event, tens of thousands of young spellers across the country compete to participate.

WPTV NewsChannel 5 Anchor Ashleigh Walters will serve as Enunciator of the 50th Annual Lillian A. Dassori Elementary Spelling Bee in Martin County on Thursday.

Five contestants from each of Martin County School District's 12 elementary schools, along with fifth-grade students from Indiantown Middle School, will compete in the local Bee Jan. 14, 2016 at Jensen Beach High School.

Each of the top three spellers will receive an award.  Each participant will receive a certificate.

The bee was named after Lillian A Dassori, a founding member and charter president of the Soroptomist International of Stuart and a Martin County Supervisor of Schools

The Treasure Coast Scripps Regional Spelling Bee is scheduled for March 12, 2016 at the Port St Lucie Civic Center.

The E. W. Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation's largest and longest-running educational promotion.  The events help students with spelling, vocabularies and life lessons.

The event draws international attention and is broadcast from Washington, D.C. each year on ESPN.
