This 4th of July was expected to be a busy weekend for Treasure Coast businesses.
The keyword "was." Algae blooms and poor water quality may be affecting the bottom line of some businesses.
Along the Indian River Lagoon, Irene Gomes at the Driftwood Motel is optimistic so far. She has several reservations. However, she's worried customers will see the water is not so great. She's worried about one customer in particular.
"Customer that I'm concerned about that's coming in for seven months," said Gomes. Irene is worried about a potential $13,000 loss.
At Flying Fish Paddle Boards in Port Salerno, Danny Robitaille is getting calls about the water. "Does affect business, hurts us dearly," said Robitaille.
So that's why Friday evening, business owners planned a dialogue about keeping their businesses afloat during a water crisis.
"People can get a good clear understanding of where it's safe to go," said Robitaille.
They hope the nine-day hiatus of discharges helps their bottom line as well.
