U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson will be in Stuart Friday to talk about the concerns related to the recent discharges from Lake Okeechobee.
Nelson will meet local officials at Indian River State College's technology center.
The senator will also take a helicopter tour of the Hoover Dike, the Indian River Lagoon and the storm water treatment area that's designed to hold and clean the water before it reaches the St. Lucie River.
The amount of discharges from Lake Okeechobee will not be reduced anytime soon.
The Army Corps of Engineers dismissed a request this week from the South Florida water management district to cut the discharges in half.
On Monday, commissioners in Stuart will vote on asking for a state of emergency to be declared because of the discharges. Last week, Martin County commissioners asked the state for this declaration.
The Army Corp of Engineers say they will continue to discharge as much water as they think is "practical."
