STUART, Fla. (AP) -- The entire St. Lucie River is open for swimming for the first time in a year after bacteria levels have dropped to an acceptable level.

TCPalm reports that the Florida Department of Health gave the all clear Wednesday for the river, which runs through Martin and St. Lucie counties.

Portions of the river had been closed because of high levels of bacteria caused by human or animal feces. The bacteria are found in storm water and can come from sewage, pets and wildlife.

Contact with high levels of the bacteria can cause upset stomachs, diarrhea, eye irritation and rashes.
