After waiting 18 months for justice, the family of a Boca Raton woman killed by a teenager leading police on a car chase will have to wait longer.
A judge hoped to sentence 17-year-old Wesley Brown on vehicular manslaughter charges for the death of Wendy Harris-Aceves. However, one of the defense's witnesses called saying she had food poisoning and wouldn't be able to make it, so the sentencing was postponed until April sixth at 1 p.m.
Brown was convicted of vehicular homicide and running from police in February.
In November of 2015, he was driving what turned out to be a stolen car. When police spotted him, he led them on a chase, running a ref light on Palmetto Park Road and slamming into Wendy Harris-Aceves, who was driving to pick up her daughter from a school dance. Harris-Aceves died on the scene.
"Consequences have to come along with what we choose to do in life," said Harris-Aceves mother, Judy. "We all have to live with our consequences, and I just hope that the judge sees what's best all the way around."
Brown is facing a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. Harris-Aceves' family asked the judge to give him the full sentence.
