The Florida Highway Patrol said a driver left a crash scene and was later found on a hotel roof after fleeing the scene of crash involving a patrol car late Thursday morning.

Trooper Stephan Coe was driving on the northbound Interstate 95 exit ramp, preparing to make a left turn onto 45th Street.

Coe said he saw a 2014 Mazda driving carelessly in the right turn lane and over the raised curb to enter the left turn lane.

After completing the turn, Coe attempted to stop the Mazda.  FHP said the driver of Mazda, identified as Thomas Vilseis, 25, of Lake Worth, made a left turn to enter southbound I-95 and struck a 1999 Nissan that was traveling eastbound on 45th Street.

The impact caused the other vehicle to strike the FHP patrol vehicle. The cause of the crash remains under investigation to determine the color of the light facing the Nissan.

FHP said Vilseis fled the scene on foot and was later found on the roof of a nearby Holiday Inn.  He was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center for treatment and later transported to the Palm Beach County Jail.

Vilseis is charged with failing to stop after a crash, driving with a suspended license, resisting an officer and drug possession.

The driver of the Nissan was transported to JFK North Medical Center and identified as 46-year-old Aldonza Appolo of West Palm Beach.

Coe was treated and released from St. Mary’s Medical Center.
