Public defender had conflict of interest

The man accused of starving his 1-year-old daughter to death has a new lawyer.

Alejandro Aleman appeared in court Friday. A judge assigned him in a private attorney, at the cost of the taxpayers. Michael Salnick will now represent Aleman.

The public defender’s office said it could not represent Aleman because it is representing his wife.

Both Kristen Meyer and Aleman face 1st degree murder charges. The couple's daughter died in April at their Loxahatchee home.

The Florida Department ofChildren and Families had previously investigated the family. In a recent report, it admitted to missing opportunities to intervene before the girl’s death. DCF has since changed policies to better protect children as a result of this case.

DCF has custody of the couple’s 10 other children.
