TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida senator is pushing to have filters placed in drinking fountains at any school built before 1886 to remove lead that seeps in from old pipes.

The Senate Education Committee approved a bill Tuesday that would require the filters in older schools and to post which water sources are for drinking and which are not.

Democratic Sen. Janet Cruz said no level of lead in drinking water is safe for children. She represents Hillsborough County, which recently revealed tests that showed lead in school drinking fountain water. Other school districts have found the same.

While the bill passed unanimously, some senators expressed concerns about how to pay for the filters and whether it would hurt districts or if the state would help with the cost.
