Grocery chain Trader Joe’s is recalling raw walnuts nationwide due to possible Salmonella contamination.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, the Salmonella contamination was discovered in routine testing by a company contracted by the FDA:

The walnuts are packaged in clear plastic bags and are identified as:

  • Trader Joe’s Nuts Raw California Walnut Pieces
  • Trader Joe’s Nuts Raw California Walnut Halves & Pieces
  • Trader Joe’s Nuts Raw California Walnut Baking Pieces
  • Trader Joe’s Nuts Raw California Premium Walnut Halves
  • Trader Joe’s organic Raw Walnut Halves & Pieces

The products have been removed from store shelves, the FDA said.

There are no known reports of illness, but Salmonella can cause fatal infections in young children, the elderly or people with weakened immune systems.

Salmonella is responsible for 1.2 million illnesses, 19,000 hospitalizations and about 400 deaths each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and prevention.

The symptoms of Salmonella infection are diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps within 12 to 72 hours of infection. Children are considered the most at risk of illness from Salmonella contamination.
