Officials in Philadelphia say a man wearing a New Jersey Devils cap fatally stabbed another man after an argument about the clothing item escalated.
The incident happened just after 3 a.m. Sunday, Philly.com reports.
When emergency responders arrived at the scene, in the city’s Rittenhouse Square, they found 24-year-old Colin McGovern lying on the sidewalk with stab wounds to the torso.
He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
An investigation revealed that McGovern and a friend were arguing with 40-year-old Steven Simminger over Simminger’s Devils cap when an argument, which escalated into a physical altercation, ensued. Details of the argument were not clear.
Simminger has been charged with murder, among other offenses. He remains in custody without bail.
"Very, very senseless," Homicide Capt. James Clark said Monday, announcing murder charges against Simminger.
