The highway collapsed when the cliff below gave way during a torrential rain storm on Thursday.
The road was washed away into the Pacific Ocean.
Officials say the roadway is continuing to erode as debris and water flow off the Big Sur mountains.
Caltrans crews began assessing the damage Friday and are starting clean-up and repairs.
It is not immediately clear how long those repairs will take.
