POINTE-A-LA-HACHE, La. (AP) -- Three people have been found guilty for their roles in a boat collision that killed a 33-year-old Louisiana man in 2013.
State District Judge Kevin Connor sentenced Larissa Demoll, 51, of Boothville, on charges including negligent homicide, hit-and-run driving and obstruction of justice, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said in a news release Friday. She was ordered to serve three two-year jail terms and three three-year terms, but all will run at the same time, according to the agency.
Connor also sentenced Arthur Giles, 62, of Belle Chasse, for conspiracy to obstruct justice. He got a suspenced two-year sentence, two years of supervised probation and a $500 fine. Tyler Scott, 27, of Belle Chasse, was sentenced to a suspended six-month jail term, probation and a $250 fine plus court costs for criminal mischief. The three were convicted Thursday, the department said.
Wildlife and Fisheries agents began investigating after Steven "Brad" Malcolm, 33, of Madisonville, died and his two passengers were injured in Flat Boat Pass near Venice. Demoll, Giles and Scott originally told agents that Scott was operating a 28-foot boat that collided with a 24-foot boat driven by Malcom, according to the news release.
After further investigation, agents determined that Demoll was driving the larger boat, which belonged to a company owned by Giles, and that she left the scene.
