Authorities are crediting an alert bank teller for a tip that led them to arrest a Martin County contractor.

Investigators say two women hired Girolamo “Gino” Brancaccio of Hobe Sound to do some contracting work. However, the 45-year-old changed the $11,600 check he received to the amount of $17,600, according to the sheriff's office.

They say a bank teller noticed the altered check and notified the victims.

The sheriff's office says Brancaccio had previously forged and cashed two of four blank checks he stole for the victims' home.

He faces charges of forgery and grand theft on a person over 65.
