Girl Scouts sold 2.5M boxes of cookies online

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- It's Year 2 of online Girl Scouts cookie sales.

The Girl Scouts organization launched Digital Cookie in 2014 -- the first official e-commerce site for youngsters selling cookies.

Nearly 160,000 Girl Scouts used the platform last year.

On Tuesday, Girl Scouts of the United States of America said it will update to its online cookie ordering platform.

This year's platform adds a calculator for Girl Scouts to keep track of their sales and new ways for them to organize orders.

The plan is to be a "fully integrated" online and mobile commerce platform by 2017, said Sheila Narayanan, chief digital girl experience executive for Girl Scouts. Eventually, all 112 Girl Scouts councils will use the same system.

Customers placed more than 350,000 online orders during the last cookie sale, selling an additional 2.5 million boxes, according to the Girl Scouts. The result was an additional $10 million.

Before the platform launched last year, individual Girl Scouts have tried to peddle cookies online.

One higher-profile example was reality television star Honey Boo Boo, who tried to sell the cookies through her Facebook page.
