As shoppers' preferences for buying products on websites like Amazon instead of at brick-and-mortar stores changes, more than 8,600 retailers will close their doors in 2017.

The Wall Street Journal says one-quarter of America's shopping malls are expected to shutter in the next five years.

These closures are forcing shopping and entertainment districts like CityPlace to get inventive when 110,000-square-foot anchor stores like Macy's pull out.

Opening later this month in the former Macy's location at CityPlace is an experimental space called Culture Lab.  It will be a cultural arts center and creative space.

Inside, the Culture Lab will host events, exhibits, and other surprises.

New Art Installation

Completed on the outside of the building is an Art Installation called "Palm Beach Parade."  The mural features bold everyday images in vibrant colors including a soccer ball, thumb drive, French fries, sneakers, credit card, and sunglasses. Created by Yale University Master of Fine Arts student Michael Craig-Martin. It is his largest mural to date.

Inside a sound installation is opening soon entitled 'You Are the Magic" created by artist Stephen Vitiello  The exhibit consumes the entire second floor of the former Macy's department store.  Taste and See South Florida has plans to bring you further information in the next few weeks.
