The father of country music star Kenny Chesney has been charged with aggravated assault for allegedly beating his Claiborne County neighbor with a golf club and his fists Tuesday, authorities said.

The alleged attack occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. outside Dave Chesney’s Tazewell condominium at the Woodlake Lodge, Golf & Country Club, according to an incident report.

The victim, identified as Jonathan Matthew Jones, president of the local homeowners’ association, had confronted the 72-year-old Chesney for repeatedly allowing his dog to roam unleashed on the club’s grounds.

Chesney allegedly responded with a golf iron.

“The victim said (Chesney) swung at him eight or nine times, and hit him six,” said Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Wayne Lee. “He also hit him several times in the face with his fist.”

Chesney also allegedly knocked the man’s sunglasses off his face and stomped on them.

Jones, 32, declined medical attention.

Chesney, a former Claiborne County school board member, is charged with vandalism under $500 as well. He was being held at the Claiborne County Jail pending an arraignment Wednesday morning.
